Medicare Cost Projections Rise Under Different Assumptions

The official projections for Medicare spending follow current law. The Medicare actuaries produce "alternative illustrations" under different assumptions. The alternative scenario assumes payment formulas created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and replacement of the Sustainable Growth Rate formula for physicians prove too low, and Congress ultimately alters them to grow a bit faster than the economy. The scenario also assumes lawmakers repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which is supposed to develop proposals improving efficiency amongst Medicare providers if health care costs were to resume rapidly increasing.
