WASHINGTON — Diane Lim, chief economist of The Concord Coalition, has become president of the National Tax Association (NTA), the leading organization of tax professionals dedicated to advancing the understanding of the theory and practice of public finance.
WASHINGTON — Diane Lim, chief economist of The Concord Coalition, has become president of the National Tax Association (NTA), the leading organization of tax professionals dedicated to advancing the understanding of the theory and practice of public finance.
Lim (formerly Rogers) was inaugurated Friday at the association’s 105th annual conference in Providence, RI. She will serve in this role for one year, having served as a vice president of the organization over the past two years.
Lim joined The Concord Coalition in 2008 as its first chief economist. She writes frequently on a variety of fiscal and economic issues for Concord and is quoted by news organizations around the country. She also writes the Economist Mom blog (EconomistMom.com).
“The coming year will be a critical time for tax policy, so I am especially honored and thrilled to be serving as NTA president,” Lim said. “With taxes now such an essential part of the broader debates about fiscal and economic policy, if we can shine a bigger spotlight and hold up a larger megaphone to the collective wisdom of the NTA, I believe tax policy will be made better by it.”
Founded in 1907, the National Tax Association (www.ntanet.org) is a non-partisan, non-political educational association that fosters the study and discussion of complex and controversial issues in tax theory, practice and policy, as well as other aspects of public finance. The NTA has a diverse membership of government, corporate, academic and independent tax professionals, including federal and state legislators and administrators, tax lawyers, accountants, professors, students and other interested citizens.
Lim plans several initiatives in the coming year to increase the visibility and influence of the NTA and to support the design and implementation of good tax policy. These include a survey of NTA members’ opinions about tax policy and a special conference marking the 100th anniversary of the U.S. income tax.
“There is tremendous public confusion regarding tax policy because the loudest voices in the media tend to be the politicians, political strategists and commentators with very clearly opposing, and sometimes extreme, views,” Lim says. “But among those of us who study and work with taxes full time, there is a lot more agreement about what makes good vs. bad tax policy, as well as recognition of what the important trade-offs are in any effort to improve tax policy and administration.”
Lim holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from Brown University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Before joining Concord, she served as chief economist for the House Budget Committee, a research director at the Brookings Institution, and in a variety of other positions inside and outside of government. Lim is also an adjunct professor at the School of Public Policy and Public Administration at George Washington University.
