Former U.S. congressmen William H. Zeliff (R-N.H.) and Richard N. Swett (D-N.H.) revisited their time on Capitol Hill when they spoke to the Manchester Rotary Club last week on a familiar topic: Fixing the federal budget.
While representing different parties, they worked together on fiscal issues in Congress during the 1990s and still see eye-to-eye on the need for major reforms to reduce the national debt and promote economic growth.
Zeliff and Swett underscored the need for leaders who will make the tough choices necessary, urging the audience to help ensure that fiscal responsibility is a top issue in the 2016 campaign.
Both are active in “First Budget,” a nonpartisan initiative of The Concord Coalition and the Campaign to Fix the Debt that encourages presidential candidates to discuss their plans to put the nation on a more sustainable course.
“Participating in this initiative is one of the most important things I can do,” said Zeliff. Swett echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the need to protect future generations from the consequences of today’s unsustainable policies.
