George Voinovich, a member of The Concord Coalition Board of Directors, died Sunday at age 79. A two-term U.S. senator from Ohio known for his common-sense, bipartisan approach to fiscal responsibility, he joined the Concord board following his retirement from the Senate in 2011. Before his tenure in the Senate, the Republican also served as Cleveland mayor and Ohio governor during well over four decades of public service. “In every office,” The Columbus Dispatch noted, “Voinovich was a pay-as-you-go fiscal hawk, fixated on government efficiency, endlessly evoking the mantra that he would work harder and smarter and do more with less.” The Concord Coalition mourns his passing.
