I was joined by Concord Coalition Executive Director Robert L. Bixby and economist Diane Lim on the latest Facing the Future for the “Economist Mom” segment. We picked up on our conversation about the changing economy and the changing nature of work.
Lim said we have seen an acceleration in the so-called “gig economy,” and technological advancements have caused dramatic evolution in a variety of industries. As that happens, the traditional employer-employee relationship is changing. That change is, among other things, impacting taxes, retirement planning and health care benefits.
“I would hope that policymakers would take a look at how our economy and society have been changing over the years … and making benefits and tax systems that are responding to those changes in the nature of work in terms of benefits going with a person and not so much tied to a person staying in their employer-employee relationship,” she said.
