WASHINGTON — The Concord Coalition will release a report on the first year of its Fiscal Stewardship Project next Monday, Dec. 7, at a conference on Capitol Hill. The project established advisory groups and programs in seven areas around the country to study the long-term fiscal and economic challenges facing the United States and to recommend possible solutions.
Concord Coalition Executive Director Robert L. Bixby will be joined by U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) in a discussion of the report and Mr. Wolf’s SAFE Commission legislation.
WASHINGTON — The Concord Coalition will release a report on the first year of its Fiscal Stewardship Project next Monday, Dec. 7, at a conference on Capitol Hill. The project established advisory groups and programs in seven areas around the country to study the long-term fiscal and economic challenges facing the United States and to recommend possible solutions.
Concord Coalition Executive Director Robert L. Bixby will be joined by U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) in a discussion of the report and Mr. Wolf’s SAFE Commission legislation.
Supported by a grant from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Fiscal Stewardship Project involved citizens in Atlanta, Denver, Iowa, Milwaukee, Northern California, Northern Virginia and Philadelphia.
“Politicians may be surprised at how emphatic ordinary citizens are about fiscal responsibility and what solutions they are prepared to consider once they have studied the issues,” Bixby said. “The work of the fiscal advisory councils should demonstrate to elected officials that their constituents are ready and willing to help make the hard choices that good fiscal stewardship requires now and for future generations.”
These fiscal advisory councils were designed to be models of civic engagement and to demonstrate to policymakers that Americans around the country are serious about fiscal responsibility, greater accountability in Washington, and policies that do not cheat future generations by saddling them with massive government debt.
The Concord Coalition’s report will include the findings and recommendations of each of the advisory councils. The recommendations cover a broad range of subjects including health care, Social Security, Medicare, federal deficits, tax policies, economic growth, problems with the congressional budget process and proposals for a bi-partisan fiscal stewardship commission to help elected officials put the country on a more realistic and sustainable course.
The Concord Coalition will release its report on the Fiscal Stewardship Project at a program from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 7 in Room 2226 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Bixby will provide an overview of the project, and representatives of each of the advisory councils will discuss their work and plans for the future. Congressman Wolf will comment on the bipartisan Securing America’s Future Economy Commission, which includes a call for public engagement.
