WASHINGTON — The Concord Coalition will run an ad in this Sunday’s New York Times
urging President Clinton to strongly support measures moving through
Congress that would raise monthly Medicare premiums for the affluent
elderly and gradually raise the Medicare eligibility age for workers
retiring in the next century.
The ad is signed by Concord Co-Chairs and former Senators Warren Rudman
(R-N.H.) and Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), and Concord President Pete Peterson,
former Secretary of Commerce.
WASHINGTON — The Concord Coalition will run an ad in this Sunday’s New York Times

retiring in the next century.

(R-N.H.) and Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), and Concord President Pete Peterson,
former Secretary of Commerce.
"At this important moment, Mr. President, it’s up to you to
take the lead," the ad states. "After last year’s bitter political
battles over Medicare, the House is skittish about voting to touch
senior benefits without receiving a signal that you are on board. We
urge you to send that signal, loudly and clearly."
The ad also urges the president and members of both parties in
Congress to speak out about the need for long-term entitlement reform
with "greater honesty, realism and urgency."
"When you keep telling voters it ain’t broke, they feel increasingly
betrayed each time you propose a fix," the ad states. "It’s time to lay
to rest the myths designed to soothe the public — for instance, that
Social Security’s illusory trust fund can pay full benefits all the way
until 2029."
