WASHINGTON — Diane Lim Rogers, chief economist for The Concord Coalition, will focus on the federal budget, tax policy and deficit reduction in a new column for the weekly magazine Tax Notes.

The column, “Taxes for a Civilized Society,” will also appear in Tax Notes Today, a daily online publication. Both Tax Notes and Tax Notes Today are published by Tax Analysts, a non-profit provider of federal, state and international tax news and analysis.

Drawing on her experience both in the federal government and at the non-partisan Concord Coalition, Rogers will emphasize reforms that could streamline the tax code, help improve the nation’s fiscal outlook and contribute to a stronger economy.

In her inaugural column at http://concordcoalition.org/publications/2011/0613/taxes-civilized-society, Rogers explains that “being civilized” about taxes means recognizing tax policy’s contribution to the federal budget as a whole, improving the tax system so that it can collect sufficient revenue as efficiently and equitably as possible, and encouraging U.S. policymakers to reach agreement on policies that will promote the common good.

At Concord Rogers writes policy briefs, gives speeches and provides general expertise on the economic effects of federal budget and tax policies. She also writes EconomistMom.com, named one of the top economics blogs by The Wall Street Journal. The new column will reflect her own views, not necessarily the official positions of The Concord Coalition.

Rogers received her BA in economics from the University of Michigan in 1983, her MA from Brown University in 1984, and her PhD from the University of Virginia in 1991. She began her career as an economics professor at Penn State University before moving to Washington in 1994. She continues to teach part-time at George Washington University’s public policy school, and serves on the board of directors of the National Tax Association.
