WASHINGTON — A conference next Tuesday on Capitol Hill will focus on the importance of curbing the growth of the federal debt and finding ways to prevent future budget crises.
Former Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad will give the keynote address at the conference, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 3. Other featured speakers:
· Former Senator Evan Bayh (D-Ind.)
· Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office
· Former Rep. David McCurdy (D-Oakl.)
· Former Rep. Jim Nussle (R-Iowa)
· Alan Rhinesmith, fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration
· Eugene Steuerle, fellow and Richard B. Fisher Chair at the Urban Institute
· John Broderick, dean of the University of New Hampshire School of Law
In addition, Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) will offer comments by video. Former Rep. Mike Oxley (R-Ohio) will make opening remarks.
The conference is entitled “Moving Beyond the Short-Term: What Will It Take to Prevent a Debt Crisis?” It will be held at the Capitol Visitor Center, room 202-203.
Discussion topics will include the state of the economy, the federal budget process, infrastructure investment, the importance of a long-term strategy to stabilize the debt, and the consequences of continued inaction in Congress.
The conference has been organized by the University of New Hampshire’s Warren B. Rudman Center for Justice, Leadership and Public Policy and the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, in partnership with Fix the Debt, The Center for Public Integrity and The Concord Coalition. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation is sponsoring the event.
