Concord, N.H. – In the first debate of the 2016 campaign tomorrow, it is critical that the Republican presidential candidates acknowledge the nation’s difficult budget challenges and ensure that the proposals they offer are fiscally responsible and realistic.
First Budget has been active in Iowa and New Hampshire, asking candidates: “If you are elected our next President, what will you do in your first budget to address the national debt?” We are working in both states to encourage a substantive discussion about this issue.
As part of that effort, First Budget recently released an issue guide that includes key information about the federal debt and related topics such as taxes, entitlement programs, health care spending and the economy.
Polling indicates that many Republican voters want candidates to talk about the budget and national debt.
The candidates should take advantage of available opportunities to discuss crucial issues such as how to hold down health care costs, put Social Security and Medicare on sustainable paths, improve the efficiency and fairness of the tax code and ensure that defense dollars are well spent.
The heads of both The Concord Coalition and the Campaign to Fix the Debt will be available to journalists for post-debate analysis tomorrow evening:
