ORLANDO, FLA. – Several former members of Congress will be on hand at the University of Central Florida Monday to challenge students to do something that lawmakers have found difficult: put the federal budget on a more sustainable path.
This budget exercise will take place during the Lou Frey Institute’s fall symposium in Orlando.
ORLANDO, FLA. – Several former members of Congress will be on hand at the University of Central Florida Monday to challenge students to do something that lawmakers have found difficult: put the federal budget on a more sustainable path.
This budget exercise will take place during the Lou Frey Institute’s fall symposium in Orlando.
The challenge is being posed to area high school students and a few others who are more experienced with budget matters. The students are from Spruce Creek High School, Satellite High School, and Trinity Preparatory School, as well as students from UCF’s Learning Institute for Elders. Nearly 200 people are expected to participate.
Former elected officials will be giving guidance. Former Congressman Bill Zeliff will lead a panel discussion that includes former Reps. Jason Altmire, Allen Boyd, Cliff Stearns and Tom Tauke, as well as Reverend John Allen Newman.
This will be followed by the budget exercise, “Principles and Priorities.” Working in small groups, participants will discuss and vote on spending and tax options in an effort to reduce federal deficits over the next 10 years.
Former Congressman Lou Frey and the university’s Lou Frey Institute are hosting “The Federal Budget: Making Tough Choices” with the Campaign to Fix the Debt and The Concord Coalition, nonpartisan organizations that advocate more responsible fiscal policies and help elected officials and the public better understand the consequences of rising government debt.
