WASHINGTON — The
Concord Coalition is proud to announce that former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey (D-NE) has
joined Concord’s Board of Directors. Kerrey
served his home state of Nebraska as Governor from 1983-87 and as U.S. Senator for two
terms, from 1989 to 2001. He currently serves
as President of New School University, New York, NY.
As Governor, Kerrey inherited a budget deficit, but by the time he
left office in 1987, he had balanced the state’s budget and turned its deficit into a
budget surplus. As Senator, Kerrey served on
the Senate Finance Committee and on several congressionally chartered commissions,
including the Kerrey-Danforth Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement and Tax Reform,
1993-95, and the Breaux-Thomas National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare,
1997-99. The findings of these commissions
are often cited as definitive analyses of our nation’s entitlement system and the
options for entitlement reform.
Bob Kerrey is someone who understands the depth of the problems
facing Social Security and Medicare and has the courage to prescribe the tough medicine
necessary to create a strong economic future for all generations,” said Concord Co-Chair Warren Rudman.
“From his days in the Governor’s mansion through his time
in the Senate, Bob Kerrey is known for his vision, candor and willingness to tackle the
big issues,” said Concord Co-Chair Sam Nunn. “I look forward to working with him on
Concord’s efforts to save the surplus, pay down the national debt and reform our
entitlement system.”
“I served with Bob Kerrey on the Kerrey-Danforth Commission and
I can tell you that he has an unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility and
generationally responsible entitlement reform. He
is an influential leader who isn’t afraid to make the tough choices needed to ensure
that future generations enjoy economic prosperity, ” said Concord President Peter Peterson.
The Concord Coalition is a nonpartisan, grass roots organization
