PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Former New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg and former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell will discuss the impact of fiscal policy decisions at a public forum in New Hampshire on Monday, Jan. 25.
The forum, “Fiscal Policy and Our Economic Future,” is part of the Community College System of New Hampshire’s (CCSNH) “Granite State Conversation” series that is focused on the major issues facing the country today and how those issues impact New Hampshire. The forum, which begins at 4 p.m., will be held at Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth.
Gregg and Rendell will be followed in the program by private-sector leaders who will discuss how national policy intersects with New Hampshire priorities.
“The debt remains one of the biggest domestic challenges our country faces and failure to address this problem will have devastating consequences on our economy and financial well-being of our citizens,” said Rendell. “The greatest gift we can give our children and grandchildren is to tackle this problem once and for all so we can free up room in the budget to invest in our future.”
The private-sector leaders are Kevin Davis, CEO of Performance Sports Group Ltd., and Paul Montrone, CEO and chairman of Perspecta Trust. CCSNH Chancellor Ross Gittell and Robert L. Bixby, executive director of The Concord Coalition, will moderate the discussion.
Among the forum’s co-sponsors is First Budget, a joint nonpartisan initiative of the Campaign to Fix the Debt and The Concord Coalition. The initiative is raising public awareness of the dangers posed by the nation’s unsustainable budget policies and making this issue a high priority for the 2016 presidential candidates. Gregg and Rendell are co-chairs of Fix the Debt, and Gregg is also a member of Concord’s Board of Directors.
“Our nation’s debt and deficit remain a pressing challenge for the next president,” Gregg said. “According to the Congressional Budget Office, the fiscal 2016 deficit is projected to rise for the first time since 2009, with growing debt on an unsustainable course. It’s important to engage the public on this important issue so they can ask for solutions from the presidential candidates.”
Granite State Conversations are part of CCSNH’s series Touching the Future: Presidential Primary 1916-2016, focused on civic engagement in American democracy. The series includes civics courses taught at New Hampshire’s community colleges and high school dual-enrollment programs, and presidential candidate forums hosted on CCSNH campuses with prominent thought leaders focusing on issues important to America’s future.
